It's a platform game for the Sega Mega Drive or Genesis that was made by Sonic Team and released by Sega. The game was first released on June 23, 1991, in North America, Europe, and Australia. It is the first game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series and follows the main character, Sonic, as he tries to beat the series' main bad guy, Dr. Robotnik. Sonic's main goals in the game are to stop Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world, free the animals he has trapped, and collect six powerful gems called the Chaos Emeralds.
In 1990, Sega asked its AM8 development team to make a game with a mascot for the company. This was the start of making Sonic the Hedgehog. The production team was changed its name to Sonic Team once a hedgehog was chosen as the main character.
Reviews of Sonic the Hedgehog were mostly good. Critics liked how the game looked and how fast it felt. Making Sonic the Hedgehog the company's mascot and making the Mega Drive/Genesis more famous were both results of its commercial success.
Because it was so popular, more games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series were made, and the character was also used in other media.
The bad guy in the game, Dr. Ivo Robotnik (called "Dr. Eggman" in the Japanese version), has put the animals that live on South Island in robotic shells and metal capsules to try to steal the six Chaos Emeralds and use their power. The player takes control of Sonic the Hedgehog, whose goal is to stop Robotnik's plans by saving all of his animal friends and collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D platform game where you move from side to side. Sonic's ability to run quickly through levels with springs, slopes, high jumps, and loop-the-loops is what makes the game fun. The levels are full of dangers in the form of robots (called "badniks" in Western game guides) that Dr. Robotnik has locked animals inside. Destroying one of these robots frees the animal, but you don't have to do that to finish the game. The player also has to stay away from rows of sharp spikes, falling into pits with no bottom, being crushed by moving walls or platforms, and drowning, which can be avoided by taking in air bubbles that come out of vents every so often. The Spin move is Sonic's main move. It makes him curl up into a ball and spin quickly, hurting enemies and some obstacles that he hits. You can either jump up and down or press down on the D-Pad while moving on the ground to do this.
There are gold rings all over each level map. The player gets an extra life when they collect 100 rings. Hazards are defended against by rings. If Sonic has at least one ring on when he hits an enemy or dangerous object, he will be okay. But all of the rings he has on will be spread out; if he doesn't pick them up again in a few seconds, they will flicker and disappear. A life is lost if he is hit while not holding any rings. You can also collect shields and brief invincibility to add more layers of protection. However, Sonic will lose a life if he drowns, gets crushed, falls into a pit that never ends, or runs out of time, no matter what rings or other protection he has on.
Six areas make up the game. They are called Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain. Each area has its own threats and look. There are three shows in each zone. To move on, the player has to get through each zone. At the end of the third act of each zone, there is a boss fight with Dr. Robotnik, who drives a truck. Once the player finishes the sixth zone, they go straight to the "Final Zone" for their last battle with Robotnik. The player starts with three lives, but powerups and rings can give more. Lives are lost when Sonic hits dangerous enemies or items without rings, falls off-screen, or goes over the ten-minute time limit for an act. Lampposts that can be used as checkpoints let Sonic go back to the most recently used post if he loses a life. If Sonic loses a life because time is up but still has another life, the time will start over when he gets back to the stop. At any point in the game, if all of your lives are lost, the "Game Over" screen will show up. If you have any continues, you can start over with three lives and try again.
At the end of Act 1 or Act 2 of a zone, if Sonic has at least 50 rings, a big ring will appear that he can jump through to get to a "Special Stage." Sonic is always curled up in his Spin Attack motion in the Special Stages, and he bounces off the walls and bumpers of a maze that spins around in a full circle. For every 50 rings found in these levels, the player gets a chance to play again, but the main goal is to get to the Chaos Emerald at the end of the path without hitting any of the "goal blocks," which end the level right away. The best closing sequence is shown if the player gets all the Chaos Emeralds and finishes the game. But if the player doesn't get every Chaos Emerald, Robotnik will taunt them on the screen.
